As Horse owners, Flying Insects such as Flies and Mosquitoes are one of the main problems we have to deal with. It can be confusing to know what is safe to use for you and your horse since most spray insecticides will be absorbed thru your skin as well as the Horse's and also breathed in.
I get a lot of questions regarding ingredients in Fly Sprays and that is one reason we at Natural Sage decided to make an All Organic Fly Spray with Certified Organic Essential Oils and Organic Coat Conditioners.
But first, let's discuss what is available on the market.
Products will say they are All natural but if you look at the label it is evident that they really are not.
Some will list Pyrethrins-this is a chemical taken from Chrysanthemums or is synthetically made by industrial methods and is not a whole herbal formula. Pyrethrins target the nervous system of the insect and can be Toxic to Animals and Humans-Allergic reactions may occur after exposure leading to itchy, irritated skin, burning sensations and aggravated asthma (One child died giving a shampoo bath to her dog due to Pyrethrin in the Shampoo). Pyrethroids are synthetic insecticides (permethrin) and can contain piperonyl butoxide which enhances the toxicity to insects or speeds up the effect and are known as synergized pyrethrins. All are toxic to Cats and Fish.
These are not whole herbal, safe formulas and can cause a Toxic reaction in your Pet or can be inhaled into your lungs or absorbed thru your skin plus, because Labeling for Pet products is not highly regulated, all inert ingredients are not listed so you really don't know what else you are applying to the animal or to yourself.
Fly Spray Products that say they contain All Natural Essential Oils simply don't either and they are in such a small amount or they are not true essential oils but are cheaper chemical or synthetic forms floating in synthetic Sodium lauryl sulfate (causes skin irritation, nausea, diarrhea etc), or another preservative. You will see Geraniol which is a synthetic chemical made to be similar to a chemical in Geraniums or Eugenol which is also a man made chemical from cloves or even Mintoil-another synthetically produced chemical from Peppermint Oil. These chemicals, of course, are not Natural or definitely not Certified Organic and can be harmful to you and your pets-basically they are cheap for the manufacture.
A good example of why whole herbal formulas are much safer for you and your animals is by looking at Aspirin or the chemical Salicylic Acid which use to come from Willow Bark (one source). In a whole herbal formula, a plant will have many synergistic chemicals all working together such as in Willow Bark. When you remove one chemical and use it like Salicylic Acid, you lose the power of the whole plant or the synergistic qualities that make a whole herbal formula safer and you will get side effects such as gut irritation and bleeding.
At Natural Sage, we only make Organic Products from Certified Organic Whole Herbs (or wild), Organic Oils and Organic Essential Oils that are safe for you, your animals and your stable. We are the only company that makes a fully Organic Fly Spray along with all of our other products. Our Fly Spray Concentrate contains 12.5% Organic, Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils that are tested and come from USDA Certified Organic Sources. The rest of our Ingredients are always listed on our labels and never contain harmful preservatives or synthetic chemicals. Our Fly Spray contains 11 different and effective Organic Essential Oils to target different insects such as Lemongrass, Lemon Eucalyptus, Mint, Cedarwood, Peppermint, Rosemary, Citronella, Basil, Cinnamon, Lavender, Geranium. Our other ingredients (Inert) are also all Certified Organic such as Organic Soybean Oil, Organic Castor & Olive Oils, Organic Vanilla Extract (helps product to not evaporate), Organic Vegetable Glycerin, Organic Aloe Vera, Organic Jojoba and Avocado Oils, Organic Castile, Organic Guar Gum, Vitamin E Oil-non GMO.
We don't use Clove Oil in a large amount because it can be very irritating or sensitizing to the skin of both Animals and Humans and we only use small amounts of Clove Bud oil in a few of our products (much safer with less eugenol).
The main concept is to always read labels, if the label does not have the full information with percentage of Active Ingredients (and Inert or Inactive Percentages used) it is illegal per EPA & FDA for repellents. You as a consumer have the right to know what you are using on your animals or
yourself to make sure you are not using a toxic substance that you could be allergic to.
